In this course (which will be conducted in English) we shall be looking at the way globalization is affecting domestic and international ‘social problems’. How can we compare the way such problems are defined and dealt with in different places? How are global social problems constructed? What are the imputed causes? What are the proposed solutions? Can solutions be universal? What of the need to respect differences between places in cultures and traditions? We shall begin by considering how to study the problem of crime cross -nationally and the way this is being affected by globalization. We shall then go on to take as our case study the Palermo Protocol against Human Trafficking. How and why was this agreement reached? What role was and continues to be played by different non- state groups and organisations? What are the similarities and what are the differences in the way this agreement is enforced in Australia, Thailand and Serbia? How are ‘global indicators’ formed so as to measure progress made by nation states in fighting human trafficking? What are the drawbacks of such measures? Students will be expected to prepare for class by reading the recommended materials and will also to asked to provide summaries of what they find in the various internet websites that discuss the problem of human trafficking.
Come vengono costruiti i problemi sociali globali?
