The idea of this course is to train advanced students to understand current and emergent trends in making and using social indicators in defining and responding to global social problems. Social indicators have been defined as ‘a named collection of rank-ordered data that purports to represent the past or projected performance of different units. The data are generated through a process that simplifies raw data about a complex social phenomenon. The data, in this simplified and processed form, are capable of being used to compare particular units of analysis (such as countries or institutions or corporations), synchronically or over time, and to evaluate their performance by reference to one or more standards ‘(Kingsbury 2012) We shall be using the most up to date text on this topic is and those taking the course will be expected to familiar themselves with the whole book. This type of study is necessaily interdisciplinary and particular attention will be given to comparative sociology of law as an essential approach for interpreting and predicting the likely effects of the growth of such global indicators .
