- Programma del corso
The worth of commerce: Victorian culture and the life of the market.
This course will examine the ways in which Victorian culture negotiates its relationship to capitalism and finance in the middle decades of the nineteenth century. The course will begin by looking at texts published in the periodical press (journal articles, essays and reviews) that attempt to re-define the symbolic boundaries of commercial modernity, the cultural status of the City of London (as the centre of international trade and finance) and the intellectual life of the mercantile community. We will then read two popular novels that take into consideration specific aspects of the life of the Victorian marketplace, conferring upon business and money-making activities a high degree of symbolic prestige. Finally, we will analyse Wells’s ambivalent response to the “romance of commerce”, contextualizing his novel within late nineteenth-century discourses on advertising, the costs and benefits of imperialism and the alleged decline of the industrial spirit.
