Money and Emotions: the Culture of Capitalism in Victorian England.
How did Victorian culture respond to commercial modernity? How was the life of the market portrayed and discussed by Victorian commentators? What kind of emotional and affective paradigms were invoked in order to explain or come to terms with the instability of the capitalist economy? By looking at a variety of texts (novels, journal articles, essays and memoirs), published in the second half of the nineteenth century, this module aims to explore the following issues: the cultural critique of capitalism and finance, positive responses to the novelty of commercial modernity, the cultural idiom of business, gendered assessments of the democracy of the marketplace, the structure of feeling and the emotional paradigms that presided over the legitimization of commercial modernity, ambivalent attitudes towards the lure of profit, nostalgia and the City of London.
