    Victorian Popular Culture

The explosion of popular literature in the middle decades of the nineteenth century inspired many a Victorian commentator to interrogate the concept of the popular. E.S. Dallas, Margaret Oliphant, and Wilkie Collins, among others, offered salient critical commentary on the bustling publishing market, the proliferation of cheap literature, the emergence of an unknown public, and the difficulty of classifying the infinite variety of printed materials. Starting off with an overview of Victorian responses to the diffusion of cheap literature and the periodical press, this course explores three specific areas of interest: journalism, sensationalism, and realism. Students will learn to think critically and flexibly about different types of texts – essays, journalistic articles, novels, and short stories – and their relations to the social and cultural world of mid-Victorian England.
