  • Programma del corso

Investigating difference: literature and the negotiation of alterity

The aim of this course is to explore the vexed question of alterity through readings of different types of literary texts. We shall consider how cultural, religious and racial otherness is refracted in the texts under scrutiny, how stereotypes are contested or alternatively reinforced, and how the intertwined issues of sameness and otherness affect the verbal texture and formal features of literary works. The first part of the course consists of lectures on the early modern plays included in the reading list. The second part is mainly devoted to seminar discussions, workshops and tutorials.
