Presentazione

Flavia Stara, is a Full Professor in Philosophy of Education (2006), at the Department of Education, Cultural Heritage and Tourism of the University of Macerata.

EDUCATION:

-Ph.D. in Romance Languages and Literatures at Harvard University/ U.S.A. (1996),

-Master in Romance Literatures at Boston College/ U.S.A.(1991),

-Laurea in Philosophy at the University of L’Aquila (1987).

PRESENT RESEARCH

Recalling the notion of the American pragmatism (James, Dewey, Rorty) and its idea of an experimental and democratic culture capable to inspire a new concept of school which embodies an authentic model of education opened to the continuous verification of experience, I investigate the process of education as well as its fundamental problematic character confronting it with the newest socio-cultural requests (ethics, immigration, globalization, labor market problems, sustainability, family issues). Taking into account the perspective of the pragmatism, the psycho-physiological structure of habits and the articulated concept of human behavior, declined in their functional interconnection with the social body, a “complete education” should be developed aiming to the forming/training of people able to use a critical and independent thought, to give appropriate answers to the historical challenges, within a perspective of implication/interaction in the radical transformation of our society. Educators should not convey only professional competence, but promote as well a deeper cultural consciousness of reality and an active curiosity and responsibility about the world.
